OBD2 adapter connection guide

A compatible adapter is required for OBD2 vehicle monitoring. These general steps may help; the connection method can vary by adapter model.

Important: Adapter compatibility varies. Some adapters do not support every vehicle parameter. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi setup can differ; always follow the adapter manufacturer’s instructions. Compatibility with every generic ELM327 adapter is not guaranteed.

What is an OBD2 adapter?

An OBD2 adapter is a device that communicates between a vehicle’s diagnostic port and a phone. When used with a compatible app and vehicle, it may help read specific parameters supported by the vehicle. Available data depends on the vehicle and adapter.

Where is the OBD2 port?

The OBD2 port is commonly located on the driver’s side below the dashboard; its exact position varies by vehicle. Check your vehicle owner’s manual or consult verified manufacturer information. Do not modify the port, wiring, or electrical components.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi adapters

Bluetooth adapters connect to a phone over Bluetooth. Wi-Fi adapters may create their own wireless network, which the phone may need to join; this can affect mobile internet access. Pairing and access steps depend on the device type, operating system, and manufacturer instructions.

Basic connection steps

  1. Check compatibility between your vehicle and adapter using information from the adapter manufacturer.
  2. Park safely. Insert the adapter into the OBD2 port as described by its manufacturer and your vehicle owner’s manual.
  3. Follow the adapter manual for its Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection method and any pairing steps.
  4. Open the connection screen in Oto Ninja, choose an available connection method, and connect to a compatible adapter.
  5. After connecting, remember that only parameters provided by your vehicle and adapter may be available.

Recording trips with GPS

GPS-based trip recording can be used without an OBD2 adapter. Route recording requires permission for the app to access your device’s location. Background recording and permission options depend on your phone’s operating system. If permission is denied, location-based route information may not be recorded.

Trip data and fault codes

Your trips and related driving data are currently stored in the app's local database on your device and are accessible within the app. An optional server synchronization feature is planned for a future release; it is not available yet.

Oto Ninja cannot currently read vehicle fault codes; this feature is planned for a future release. If added, displayed codes and descriptions should not be treated as a definitive diagnosis. Consult a qualified automotive professional for accurate diagnosis and repair.
